My heart goes out to Gabby Douglas today. The media can be cruel to anyone in the public eye, especially well known athletes on #TeamUSA gymnastics. The media needed to chill out. How long was it since they competed? I don’t think they should only celebrate only gold medal winners like Michael Phelps, Simone Biles, and Katie Ledecky. Every member on the participating teams in Rio deserve recognition.
Gabby Douglas, your mother is right, focus on your talent, not the media criticism. The best way to respond to the media is saying nothing. It gave the person a better command of the English language Thomas Jefferson did that when he lived openly with this mistress, Sally Hemmings, a black slave woman. On your resume, there is more to work with then these armchair critics have to begin with. Take it with a grain of salt. The one thing that bothered me the most is the sports commentator seemed hell-bent on finding problems with the routines when gymnasts perform. They spend too much time talking about the deductions rather than the performance as a whole. If they performed before, they compare that too, unfortunately.
Gabby Douglas has every right to be hurt by what is said about her in the social media. It is awful being constantly badgered about everything from A to Z concerning her actions at the all around medal ceremony to her personal appearance. People have distorted views about athletes’ lives anyway. Her mother was right here too. What they don’t know, they make up. It’s been done to me all my life. Consider the source and ignore it. Most of what the media does is to make headlines. It didn’t matter how they did this. The only time one put their hand over their heart is when reciting the pledge of allegiance to the flag, not during the national anthem. As a former military dependant, my cues came from my father, also a Vietnam veteran. I have your back, Gabby!
All of the coaches following #TeamUSA would tell everyone where to park their attitudes. They don’t have time for divas. The gymnastics team isn’t any different in supporting each other. Gabby Douglas wasn’t one sided in her support of the gymnastic team. Once again, the need to make headlines where there weren’t any overrides media’s sense of decency and ethics.
Keep smiling, Gabby!
